Suzhou is a city on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and on the shores of Lake Taihu in the province of Jiangsu, China. The city is renowned for its beautiful stone bridges, pagodas, and meticulously designed gardens which have contributed to its status as a great tourist attraction. Since the Song Dynasty (960-1279), Suzhou has also been an important centre for China's silk industry and continues to hold that prominent position today. The city is part of the Yangtze River Delta region.
It is occasionally nicknamed the "Venice of the East" or "Venice of China" as the city is veined by set of channels where Chinese gondoliers ride tourists. In due time all channels have been constructed for water level regulation in the river Yangtze, but what is the most surprising, small houses on abrupt coast of channels do not change its shape during centuries.
Climate in Suzhou is mild, and landscapes are so beautiful that it seems, as if they have descended from paintings. In 14 km to the West from Suzhou there is one of the most picturesque places on lake Tai Hu - mountain Tienpinshan. Its height is 221 m. There are many historical monuments and beautiful places here.
Suzhou is located not far from Shanghai and has become famous for the numerous gardens (now them more than 70) which are surprising masterpieces of town-planning. The Garden of the modest governor - Zhozheniuan is the most famous. It really masterpiece created from the stone, water, tree and plants. Names of all pavilions of the park connected by artificial lake, are traditionally very poetical - the Hall of Fragrance, the Hall of orchid and snow …
Suzhou have got its own falling tower - pagoda of Cloudy rocks temple .
